Scope and Content
The long geological history of Mull has made it a mecca for geologists ever since early travellers came to gaze upon the wonders of Staffa and MacCulloch (1773 - 1835) wrote his classic series of letters to Sir Walter Scott The Highlands and Western Isles of Scotland, 1824. The latest volcanic event on Mull, the tertiary volcanic activity of 60 million years ago has covered the island in basaltic rock but beneath it, and peeping out from under its skirts are rocks of almost every previous age back to Lewisian gneiss of 2000 million years ago. Rosalind Jones, “Mull in the Making” (Library 2.B-1) and “Mull in the Shaping” (Library 6.C-7) give an introduction to the geology and ice age of Mull whilst J.E, Richey et al “The Tertiary Volcanic Districts of Scotland” (Library 5.D-18) sets Mull in the context of neighboring Ardnamurchan and islands such as Rum, Skye, St Kilda, Rockall and Arran
