Administrative / Biographical History
Jewish immigrants settled in Inverness in the late 19th century. By 1905, a synagogue was established in a hall in the centre of town. The Reverend S. Arkush conducted services and carried out a teaching role, a position later held by the Reverends Leib A. Falk, S. Gerber and Isaiah Ticktin. Each served on a short-term basis.
The community was never very large – perhaps 18 Jewish families in 1905, 45 individuals in 1911 and about 25 in 1921. The community ceased to exist in the 1940s. There are around 25 burials in the Jewish section of Tomnahurich Cemetery, 1906-2019.
