Administrative / Biographical History
David Scott was born at Breck, Sanday in 1823, the son of John Scott and Janet Drever. He left to work in Kirkwall as a clerk to James Drever, brewer, and later went on to work for K. Mathieson, contractor, who was constructing railway lines in Fife for the North British Railway. From 1848 - 1859 he was employed as an accountant for the Easdale Slate Quarries and Estate near Oban. In 1859 he joined P. & O. in London as purser and shortly after that became agent's assistant in Hong Kong. By the end of 1860 he was back in London on sick leave and for some years was employed in the London office, being unfit for Foreign Service. He died at sea en route for Malta.
