Scope and Content
The photograph depicts three children working on an allotment. In the foreground a boy is removing leaves from a turnip, while a girl places another in a bag. Another girl in the background holds a basket and rests a large fork across her right shoulder. The photograph was clearly taken at the same time as UGC 222/1/9/8, as the same children are featured in both images wearing the same clothes. handwritten in pencil on the back is "School Children, Kilmarnock" and stamped across the back is "J. Gibson, Press Photographer, (Late Park Road), Dalnottarhill Road, Old Kilpatrick, Near Glasgow. Phone WEST 6700".
Documents in UGC 222/1/9/1 note that the education authority had six plots at Ellis Gardens, Kilmarnock, where school children were taught how to cultivate flowers and vegetables, and that images were taken by "Mr Gibson, photographer" in 1939.
