• Administrative / Biographical History

  The Association for Science Education (ASE) was formed in 1963 by the merger of the Science Master's Association and the Association of Women Science Teachers. The Science Master's Association was formed in 1901 by four science masters from Eton College proposing a conference for Science Masters in Public Schools with purpose of "the attainment of some clearer method of the teaching of natural science than present, and 133. by taking united action, do something towards emphasising the value of Science as a means of education".* Now, the object of the association is to improve the teaching of science, provide an authoritative medium for teachers of science about the educational matters and afford the communication of the concerned persons and bodies. The Association has about 15,000 members in the UK with a broad spread of membership from primary and secondary teachers, to technicians, those involved in Initial Teacher Education, and also includes some 2.500 student members. The Association has 19 regions throughout the UK. Scotland is the 8th region. The Association issues various publications such as Education in Science, Primary Science Review, School Science Review and Science Teacher Education. * See the website of the Association for Science Education.
