Administrative / Biographical History
Bill Viola was born in New York in 1951. He attended Syracuse University, and worked as a video technician after he graduated. His focus on the audio as well as visual aspects of art was influenced by the period he studied with the composer David Tudor and the Composers Inside Electronic Group. Now known as a video artist, he uses contemporary technology to depict intense emotion, without providing any explanation or context for these depictions. His 1976 work 'The Space Between the Teeth' shows himself screaming. Viola also often uses extreme slow-motion, as in 'The Quintet Series' of 2000, which shows the expressions of five actors in such slow motion that the expressions themselves become almost unidentifiable. Viola's approach became broader and less dependent on technological intervention in the early 1990s, and often references Renaissance paintings.
