Administrative / Biographical History
The Carswell Church was located on Montgomery Street in the village of Eaglesham. The church was originally a United Presbyterian Church, but became the Carswell Church of Scotland after the union of the Church of Scotland and the United Free Church in 1929.
The church hall was known locally as 'Union Hall', and was the only hall in the village. It was situated slightly to the rear on the left hand side of the church building.
The church was built in 1867 at a cost of £1300 and the manse built at a cost of £700. (source: "The Church in Eaglesham" by D W Russell, 1979)
The Carswell Church is now known as Carswell Hall and takes its name after the Rev. William Carswell who was ordained in 1827. The church became the 'Children's Church' in 1959 and is currently being developed as a local community hub which will house the William Gemmel statue collection.
