Scope and Content
The committee with responsibility for sanitation and health changes over time. The first committee with those responsibilities was named Burgh of Partick Nuisance Committee (see H-PAR1/7/1) which controlled streets and sewers as well as public health functions. After August 1864 the functions were divided into a Sanitary Committee, in this series, and a Streets and Sewers Committee which continues in the H-PAR1/7/1 volume.
After 1874 the remits are combined to be the Streets Sewers and Sanitary Committee 1874-1883 (H-PAR1/8/2-3). The Committee then splits again into the Streets and Roads Committee 1883-1908 (H-PAR1/8/4-7) and the Sanitary and Sewers Committee 1883-1908 (see H-PAR1/9). The minutes in the volumes in this series all follow on from each other regardless of the changes so they have been kept together. Draft committee minutes and agendas can also be found in H-PAR1/21.
During the period when the committee was named the Streets and Roads Committee it was responsible for the scavengers and cleansing as well as street construction and maintenance.
