Papers of Professor John Spencer

Scope and Content
Material created and collected by John Spencer, Professor of Social Administration at Edinburgh University, throughout his career. Includes teaching material, correspondence, research material, committee and conference papers.
John Spencer was appointed Professor of Social Administration in 1967 and became head of the school of Social Study in 1968. He had previously held posts at London School of Economics, Manchester University and the University of Toronto. In the 1950s he was also the Director of the Bristol Social Project, funded by the Carnegie Trust and concerned with the problems of family and urban sociology.
The collectin reflects his many research interests which included homosexuality, family life, working mothers, mental health, religion, addiction, adoption and the rehabilitation of offenders. He was heavily involved in a working party to explore the operation of the Social Work (Scotland) Act in 1968.
Arrangement
No original order was present. The material has been arranged to reflect the progression of Spencer's career and is divided into the following sub-fonds: London School of Economics; University of Bristol; University of Manchester; University of Toronto; University of Edinburgh.
An additional subfonds has been created to hold printed and published reference material collected by Spencer throughout his career.
