Administrative / Biographical History
Hans Unger, designer, mosaicist, born in Germany. He studied poster design in Jupp Wiertz's studio in Berlin from 1934 - 1935. He emigrated to South Africa and worked in Cape Town as a freelance designer. He moved to London in 1948 and between 1950 and 1974 produced many posters for the London Underground and did work on the Blackhorse Road tube station. He was a member of the Art Workers Guild from 1966 - 1969. He was represented by Artists' Partners which represented such seminal figures as Tom Eckersley of London Underground fame, fashion illustrators such as Beryl Hartland, and "drawers" such as Susan Einzig — illustrators whose work was high profile throughout contemporary publishing and advertising. Artists' Partners supplied much of the artwork used to advertise the Festival of Britain in 1951.
