Scope and Content
These files relate to the Authority's war time functions. Previously ships were boarded at Greenock and radio information on their arrival was available in advance. After war broke out this was not possible due to the volume of shipping. Ships would arrive in the Clyde with no clear authority over who was responsible for boarding between the counties of Argyll, Dunbarton and Renfrew and the Port of Greenock. The Department of Health issued an order in March 1941 which extended the Port of Glasgow and formed a conjoint Port Authority for the whole Clyde area. Two staff launches and an ambulance launch, MV Galen, were also made available. The Glasgow Port Local Authority office in Greenock was the clearing house for the treatment and disposal of the sick and it also acted as the co-ordinator between ARP authorities on land and sea. It also inspected for aliens in conjunction with the Aliens Officer.
Although part of the Public Health Department, the administration of the Port Local Authority appears to have been managed separately. Therefore these files have been catalogued with the Port Local Authority records rather than with the other centralised files in D-HE/1/9.
These files were previously catalogued and, in the absence of any information on the original order, that arrangement has been retained. The files appear to have been created by Alexander Hutchison, Port Boarding Medical Officer. The items are listed in the entries in the order in which they appear in the files (which may not necessarily be chronological). The original folders were not retained and all paper clips etc were removed so letters that were pinned together are now in a paper fold. Most papers are typed with some printed and manuscript.
Fourteen of the files in this series are closed due to medical confidentiality as is indicated in the relevant entries.
