Scope and Content
Minutes of the Glasgow Parish Council and Committees (D-HE2/3/1-19); Parish of Glasgow Reports 1899-1903 (D-HE2/3/20); Glasgow Parish Council - Common Lodging and Farmed Out Houses in Glasgow (D-HE2/3/21).
After the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1894, the functions of Glasgow Parochial Board were transferred to an elected Glasgow City Parish Council. Because the Glasgow conurbation included the administrative areas of several other parochial boards, especially Glasgow Barony and Govan, close co-operation with these authorities was required. In 1898 Glasgow City and Glasgow Barony Parish Councils merged to form Glasgow Parish Council (Govan remained separate until 1930). The new authority set about the closure of the former City Poorhouse and the expansion of the former Barony poorhouse at Barnhill, which had become the largest institution of its kind in Scotland. In 1899 it also decided on the construction of a large general hospital (Stobhill, opened 1902) and two district hospitals, the Western District Hospital, known as Oakbank, and the Eastern District Hospital in Duke Street (both opened 1904). In May 1930 Glasgow Corporation inherited the functions of the former parish councils and district boards of control under the terms of the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1929.
The minutes include those of Glasgow Lunacy District Board (Gartloch Committee, Woodilee Committee, Stoneyetts Committee (from September 1914) and Joint-Sub-Committees) and Parish of Glasgow (Relief Appeal Committee, Medical and Children's Committee, Barnhill Committee, District Hospitals Committee, Epileptic Colony Committee, Stobhill Committee, Finance and Law Committee, Works Committee, Contracts Committee, Chairman's Committee, Special Committees and Adjustment Committee). The minutes are arranged by committee and not chronologically (unlike the signed copies at D-HEW/1/2).
