• Scope and Content

  Comhairle nan Eilean, or Western Isles Islands Council, was created in 1975 as one of three unitary island councils (the rest of Scotland had a a two-tier system of regional and district councils). Changes occurred in 1996, but these documents only cover 1976-1992.

  The comhairle has often been a financial supporter of the Harris Tweed industry, reflecting the industry's ongoing economic and cultural significance to the area. There is also a representative from the comhairle on the Board of the HTA.
